European Food industry investments remain very low compared to US as well as Japan, and in regard of current challenges.
“European Paradox” : the CIAA (1) shows in its report that despite European research of top quality, knowledge transfer to industry is inefficient compared to US or Japan. Competitive advantages are thus harder to create.
Because knowledge transfer is an intricate matter between research and industry, the European Commission introduced the concept of « European Technology Platforms » (ETP’s). This encourages R&D stakeholders to find what are the key issues of innovation and the future areas to explore. See: http://cordis.europa.eu/technology-platforms/home_en.html.
In the parallel, CIAA created a platform –the « Food For Life » platform- for technology transfer with the participation of big food companies.
In France, the ANIA (National Food Industries Association) showed its involvement by making an agreement with the INRA (National Institute of Research in Agronomy) regarding the technology transfer.
